Petra

It is located at the northwest tip of the island very close to Molyvos. A lush green valley surrounds the village with the awesome long beach.  However, its main attraction being its 40-metre high rock on top of which the Church of the Virgin is built.

If you want to go up to the church, you have to climb up 114 carved stone steps. But once you get there, you will be rewarded by an astonishing, breathtaking view. St Nicolas Church is also worth the visit. The village swarms with old mansions dating back to the 19th and 20th centuries, beautiful gardens etc. The Vareltzidena residence very close to the central square is quite interesting. It is a mansion which has been recently restored and is deemed unique in its kind thanks to its interior design and awesome wall paintings. Continue reading “Petra”

Anaxos

Located about 3 kilometres to the west of Petra, Anaxos is a seaside resort with a sandy one kilometre long beach which proves to be a real booster for its local economy..

Very close to Anaxos lies Skoutaros, a traditional village with beautiful houses and a marvelous neoclassical building housing the Primary School. The village hosts a Carpentry School run by the National Welfare Organisation.

To the west of Anaxos lies Tsichrada, an idyllic beach close to a lush field. The whole region swarms with traditional restaurants as well as modern, fully equipped hotels ready to make you feel at home.

 

In summertime loads of cultural events entitled “Anaxiotika” are held in Anaxos.

Molivos (Mithymna)

Lying at the northwest tip of Lesvos, Molyvos or Methymna has always been the tourist capital of the island and undoubtedly a pole of attraction both for locals and tourists who visit this awesome place for their very first time.

A significant number of poets, painters and intellectuals have been attracted since the early sixties by this place which however managed to remain totally intact against massive influences, to preserve its unrivalled architectural style, its history and tradition and not to surrender to mass tourism.

The imposing medieval castle, the second biggest castle on the island, perched on a rock being its trademark. You will be impressed by the bulky wooden gate of the castle. At present the residential area surrounds the medieval castle and goes far beyond that.

All the residences, made of stones and wood, have been densely built among the interconnected lanes; combined with the yards and the balconies they create this scenery of matchless beauty and a village of great interest as far as its planning and architectural identity is concerned. No wonder this awesome village is considered preservable and protected by the State. The picturesque harbour right on the edge of the village adds a little of local colour to this breathtaking scenery. When visiting Molyvos, it is worth viewing the St Panteleimonas Church, the St Kyriaki Church and last but not least the Basilica of Taxiarches built in 1795. Continue reading “Molivos (Mithymna)”
